London 2012 and the Whitley Bay laser light show

E-mail Print PDF

Yvette Mattern's is an American artist whose Global Rainbow is lighting up miles of the north east coast. The powerful light show is based at the famous St Mary's island car park in Whitley Bay, often used by amateur radio stations.

The display can be seen between 18:00 and 00.00 hrs until the 4 March 2012.

It consists of seven parallel beams of coloured laser light designed to be projected across large open sites. When operating it fires south towards the Spanish City as well as inland, carefully avoiding the temporary blinding of aircraft coming into land at Newcastle Airport.

Standing under the sharp coloured lasers at the Island is certainly a thrill, and made me think of G8CYW' s English light communication records, broken by this North East Group also based in the region. As the light travels further it diffuses depending on the air quality.

Hundreds gathered to watch the first show being beamed from St Mary's Lighthouse, on Wednesday.

The Global Rainbow is the first  high profile Cultural Olympiad project to take place in the region during this year.

The location can be seen on www.aprs.fi .by searching callsign LASER...
